AEX Stock Exchange
5.1bn guilders worth of new bonds and 3.6bn guilders worth of new shares were listed on AEX Stock Exchange. The beginning of October saw the first listing of Begaclaim. Initially the price rose very rapidly, but this was later followed by a reaction. At the end of each month Holland Chemical International was introduced on the exchange at a price of 37 guilders. The first listing was 37.20 guilders. Amongst the companies to make public their intentions to try for a listing on AEX Stock Exchange were the German chemical concern Benckiser, the computer services company Unit 4 and the travel agency ATP. Nedgraphics declared itself a candidate for New Market Amsterdam (NMAX).
Active trading on AEX Stock Exchange meant high turnover figures. In total 235.7 bn guilders worth of shares and bonds were traded in the first month, a rise of 35% over the figure for October 1996.
In the twelve month period beginning October 1996, the Dutch Top5 index was AEX Stock Exchange's best performing index. This index, which includes Akzo Nobel, KLM, Royal Dutch, Philips and Unilever, climbed more than 74% in the period.
AEX Options Exchange
5.1mn contracts were traded on AEX Options Exchange in October, an increase of 60% on the figure for October 1996. Premium turnover doubled in the period, reaching 11.5bn guilders in October 1997.
AEX Agricultural Futures Market
Some 11,200 contracts were traded on this market in October, an increase of 32% on the corresponding month in the previous year. Particularly striking was the huge rise in the number of potato contracts traded, up 121% to 5,251.
