With $ 217,000, NASA will finance the development of the Panamanian proposal to develop a "Forest Information and Management System".

The Ministry of Environment said in a statement that the investigation will last three years and was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration within the Program of Ecological Forecasts in the framework of the call for "Opportunities for Research in Space Sciences and the Tierra 2018 "(Roses, for its acronym in English).

The research was proposed by Erika Podest, George Chang, of NASA; Amita Mehta, of the Joint Center for Earth Systems, in collaboration with Roney Samaniego, Javier Martínez, Vaneska Bethancourt, of MiAMBIENTE and Francesco Tubiello, of the FAO (United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture).

The Vice President and Panamanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Isabel De Saint Malo de Alvarado, underlined "the importance of this project within the framework of the Scientific, Technological and Innovation Diplomacy program coordinated by the Foreign Ministry". He highlighted the achievement "as an important step in the fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goal 15, on the Life of Terrestrial Ecosystems, particularly the goal of Sustainable Forest Management," according to the source.

For his part, the Panamanian Minister of Environment, Emilio Sempris, congratulated the team that formulated the proposal and stressed that the Alliance for the Million Hectares Reforested will have the best possible technology to monitor progress in this country goal for the next 20 years.

"The Forest Information and Management System will use satellite data from the Sentinel -1 A and B, Landsat 8, MODIS and SAR of Palsar -1-2 instruments to monitor the net forest area in the context of the variability and climate change ", specified MiAMBIENTE. ACAN-EFE
