Christina A. Stoneburner was featured in the Law.com article, "Don't Do It! 3 Interviewing Faux Pas." Full text can be found in the September 3, 2015, issue, but a synopsis is below.

Christina A. Stoneburner highlights whatnottodo during the interview process, noting that "a mistake can be so easily made that could lead to a lawsuit by the applicant or losing a qualified candidate."

Do not say something that can be perceived as discriminatory, make promises or make negative comments regarding HR, warns Stoneburner.

Stoneburner goes on to elaborate, "Until a final decision is made as to who is going to be hired and at what salary, no promises should be made."

Statements such as "If it were up to me, you'd have the job but HR has to sign off on it and they're really slow" are problematic, says Stoneburner. "Comments like these make HR seem ineffective and unnecessary, which plants a seed in an applicant's head that HR is not the place to go to resolve disputes."

The content of this article is intended to provide a general guide to the subject matter. Specialist advice should be sought about your specific circumstances.
