Effective September 18, 2017, employers must use a newly revised Form I-9.

This marks the thirteenth revision since the Form I-9 was introduced in 1986 and the third revision in just the last four years. It also is the second iteration of the so called “smart" form.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) first introduced the “smart” Form I-9 on November 14, 2016. Form I-9s completed after January 22, 2017 were required to have been done on this version.
