After more than two decades as Managing Partner, Jeffrey S. Sharp will step down from his role on April 13, 2026, concluding a remarkable chapter in Marshall Gerstein’s history.
Jeff’s tenure has been defined by steady, thoughtful leadership during a period of significant change in both the legal industry and the innovation economy. When he was elected Managing Partner in 2002 at age 43, the firm was navigating a generational leadership transition in the aftermath of 9/11. Over the next 24 years, Jeff led the firm to great success, weathering economic downturns and significant shifts in the fields of science and technology, in which the firm serves its clients. The firm grew to more than 110 lawyers and legal professionals, supported by a team of approximately 110 staff members. But that growth never came at the expense of focus.
While many peer law firms were absorbed into larger general practice firms, Jeff guided Marshall Gerstein to preserve its independence and exclusive commitment to IP law, deepening its capabilities while continuing to serve many of the world’s most innovative companies, research institutions, universities, and entrepreneurs. That decision, grounded in a belief that a focused IP firm delivers greater value to clients and a stronger platform for legal talent, has become a defining feature of the firm’s identity: Chicago’s largest independent intellectual property boutique and one of the most respected law firms in the country.
Jeff stands out for his unique ability to empower people to achieve great things. His innate positive outlook and inquisitive nature, combined with his incredible patience and generosity, made him a natural leader who generated opportunities for people and put them in a position to succeed.
Jeff prioritized recruiting, mentorship, and professional development, fostering a firm culture rooted in collaboration, trust, and respect. The result is a firm where attorneys and staff build long, meaningful careers and where alumni often return after exploring opportunities elsewhere.
Jeff also led with a clear commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In a field where representation has historically lagged, Marshall Gerstein emerged as a leader, earning national recognition, including Diversity Lab’s Midsize Mansfield Rule Certification Plus and several awards from the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity.
Throughout his tenure, Jeff balanced firm leadership with an active practice, advising clients across biotechnology, chemistry, and chemical engineering. His work spans innovations in pharmaceuticals, gene therapy, diagnostic technologies, and chemical processes, reflecting both technical depth and a practical understanding of client needs. Jeff will continue his practice with a full-time focus on client service.
Beyond Marshall Gerstein, Jeff has contributed meaningfully to the broader legal and civic communities. He has served as a board member and chair of PilotLegis RPG, is active with the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms, and mentors through the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. His community involvement also includes leadership roles with The Latin School of Chicago and Princeton University alumni organizations.
As the firm celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2025, that milestone reflected the institutional strength and long-term vision that Jeff helped sustain and grow.
Those who have worked with Jeff consistently point to his patience, perspective, and generosity. He leads by example, shares credit freely, and brings a genuine enthusiasm for improving his firm, his profession, and his community.
Marshall Gerstein extends its deepest gratitude to Jeff Sharp for his extraordinary leadership and lasting contributions. His impact will continue to shape the firm for years to come.
