The FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's email practices appears to be accelerating due to an immunity deal that was granted to Bryan Pagliano, who was responsible for setting up presidential candidate's personal server.
"If prosecutors confer immunity in a case, in general it means that they at least have some intention of pursuing the matter to a grand jury. Whether they ultimately decide to pull the trigger and press charges is a whole other question," said Fox Rothschild's Bob Ray.
The immunity deal may suggest that investigators believe Pagliano has potentially valuable information that could help prove if laws were broken or that the DOJ may be building a criminal case.
"It doesn't necessarily signal that there will be charges. What it does signal is that they are accelerating past the investigation stage and things have now risen to the level of a grand jury investigation," Ray said
It should also be noted that although the DOJ does not have the power to grant immunity, federal judges may do so at the request of a DOJ prosecutor.
A DOJ prosecutor making such a request is "a pretty significant step," Ray argued.
