Construction approvals have been granted by the US Department of Interior for a 1,000 turbine 3000MW wind farm in a rural Wyoming area called, ironically, Carbon County.  The prime mover for the deal is Power Company of Wyoming.  The turbine farm will be located in two separate locations called Chokecherry and Sierra Madre.

The wind profile of the area and the Department's desire to create a "landmark" project were cited as reasons for going ahead by the Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar.  The project was also said to advance President Obama's goal of putting public land to use in 2012  for making 10K MW of renewable energy.

The project is not completely in the clear.  Environmental studies are still needed for the power lines, haul road and other facilities which will support the farm.
