In a previous issue of Law Update we reported on tremendous official fee increases for trade mark matters in Jordan. Those increases, by ministerial decree issued in December 2009, resulted in the total official fees for registering a trade mark in Jordan increasing by almost 700%.

Brand owners, including the Brand Protection Group (BPG), as well as IP practitioners, were concerned about this significant increase. These concerns were raised with the Jordanian authorities, who considered the feedback, revisited the matter, and revised the fee structure.

Now, by virtue of the Jordanian Prime Minister's decision published in the official gazette No. 5030 dated May 16th, 2010, the official fees for most trademark related matters have been reduced. (One notable exception relates to the official registration fee, which has increased from US$143 to US$424.) Based on this new development, the total official fee for registering a trademark in Jordan has effectively been reduced by about 30% from the charges as increased in December 2009.

The new official fees will be applicable on all new trademark applications filed on or after 16th May, 2010, while the official fees as increased during December, 2009 will apply to all pending applications filed between December 1st, 2009 and May 15th, 2010
