Mexico lies in the southernmost part of North America, bounded by the United States on the north; the Gulf of Mexico on the east; Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea on the southeast; and the Pacific Ocean on the south and west. It has an area of approximately 1.97 million square kilometers (760,000 square miles) and a population of approximately 92 million. Mexico is a democratic republic with a federal and representative form of government. The federation comprises thirty-one states and a federal district (Distrito Federal). The chief of state and head of government is the president (presidente).
