The EU Artificial Intelligence ("AI") Act (EU Regulation 2024/1689) introduces a complicated matrix of deadlines and transitional periods that are fast approaching. Considering the speed of AI development, and the likely roadmap for most organisations to achieve compliance, cutting-edge businesses should start working on adopting governance mechanisms and aligning compliance efforts to satisfy this framework now.
Our Technology and Innovation Group set out a simplified timeline for implementation of some key provisions of the AI Act. Whilst enforcement does not start until the dates specified in the AI Act, it is worth noting that Recital 178 of the AI Act encourages providers of high-risk AI systems, in particular, to comply on a voluntary basis, with the relevant obligations during the transitional period.
