In a Parliamentary Committee for Economic and Financial Affairs, Malta Chamber and SMEs' President Anton Borg announced that the Government is in favour of issuing a 90-day Visa valid for Libyan businessmen to travel to Malta in order to conduct business with Maltese entrepreneurs.
The Maltese Government and the Malta Chamber of Commerce are finalising plans for this initiative that will allow Maltese entrepreneurs to conduct commercial activity with Libyan businessmen in Malta rather than having to travel to Libya. This is more convenient and safer for both parties, particularly in view of the political instability that has disrupted Libya lately.
Exportation of Maltese products and services to Libya has consistently increased during these last few years, going up to €138 million in 2013 from the €85 million in 2010. The figure stood at €123 million in 2014 and €23 million for the first four months of 2015 alone. This was revealed by Mario Vella, Chairman of Malta Enterprise.
Vella further stated that following the unfortunate events in Libya, Maltese entrepreneurs realised that they needed to diversify their business operations and started looking at alternative locations such as Algeria. Some Maltese construction companies have also started operating in the sub-Saharan region.
