As the 2017 California Legislative Session nears its conclusion, Lewis Brisbois' Employment & Labor Group will publish monthly updates on notable employment bills signed into law, followed by a summary of new 2017 employment laws after the conclusion of the legislative year. 

July 2017 was a rather quiet month in the employment law world. On July 24, 2017, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law four new employment bills. Two of the bills expand the scope of permissible background checks as applied to individuals employed by public enforcement agencies and entities contracting with school districts. This is notable in light of the recent regulations that California municipalities, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, have enacted circumscribing the use of criminal history in the traditional employment context.

The other two bills concern education, with one bill pertaining to teaching credential requirements, and the other specifying standards for overtime compensation as it relates to private school teachers.
