Guidelines for Facebook's moderators on deciding what content to allow, or to remove, from the social media platform have been published by The Guardian and are likely to spark discussions around the organisation's ethics.

John Kelly one of the partners in the Reputation Protection team at Harbottle & Lewis said: "This leak has confirmed what we have always known, which is that the system of moderating social media content is complex and slow. What is interesting is the massive backlog of requests, with some moderators having as little as 10 seconds to rule on a post.

"This problem is becoming bigger than Facebook and we need to develop international rules to help people use social media safely and responsibly. One option could be to remove and suspend posts that are reported while matters are investigated. This would at least enable quicker action, which is so important especially when young people are reporting concerns."
