2016 has been the year that a number of longstanding and high-profile developments have completed boosting the provision of commercial space on offer in Leeds. Whilst the city is coming to the end of a development cycle, our research shows that 16 new developments started in 2016, equal to that of 2015, highlighting continued developer and investor interest in the city.
The key findings show:
- 16 new schemes have started, above the annual average number of 12
- 2016 saw significant retail completions with 596,500 sq ft of space developed, above the 232,478 sq ft average
- New construction activity in 2016 has been led by the office sector with the highest level of office space completed since 2006 at 712,960 sq ft
- Hotel construction activity is 72% up on 2015 with four new hotel starts, the most we have seen in our survey history
- Continued slow residential growth with 619 residential units under construction
