On 14 October, Ofgem published a summary of its proposals for reform of the energy market. Its stated intention is to ensure simpler tariffs and clearer bills so as to facilitate customer switching. The proposals include:

  • each supplier offering only one standard tariff for each payment type;
  • Ofgem setting the standing charge, such that the only variable between the suppliers is the unit price;
  • the publication of standardised price information; and
  • fixed periods and protection from price increases for consumers on more innovative deals.
