Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to release the first edition of its report New Opportunities in the Alberta Electricity Market, A BLG Overview.

The Government of Alberta recently announced a number of policy changes that will impact the Alberta Electricity Market, composed of its generators, transmitters, distributors, retailers, electricity consumers and wholesale electricity market.

BLG's Electricity Markets group has developed this report to support new project developers seeking legal and business advice to get a better understanding of: the structure of the Alberta Electricity Market; the applicable legislation and governing agencies; the characteristics of Alberta's load and generation mix; the power pool price; and the recent developments which are creating business opportunities. Alberta is one of the last provinces in Canada to mandate a change in its fuel mix for generating power.

"We have seen a rise in the number of new project developers seeking general advice," said Kent Howie, partner in BLG's Calgary office. "We concluded that such background information would be of benefit to every new entrant into the Alberta Electricity Market." This report is intended for prospective project developers as well as investors, lenders, constructors, operators or other market participants.

BLG's national Electricity Markets group, composed of over 40 lawyers in offices across Canada, is a top-ranked, multidisciplinary team that has the expertise to offer advice on all legal and business issues, opportunities and developments facing the electricity sector. In Alberta, the Calgary-based team has been active since 1996 when it advised one of the then principal Alberta utilities on market design issues as the Alberta power market was first established.
