July 5, 2019 – The first quarter of 2019 saw 98,410 people move to Canada, pushing the population to 37.4 million on April 1.
New data from Statistics Canada showed immigration was the driving force behind Canada's population increase between the start of January and the end of March 2019.
Natural population growth – the difference between births and deaths – saw a record low quarter, with only nearly 17,000 more people born than died.
Immigration accounted for 83 per cent of Canada's first quarter population growth, compared to 17 per cent natural increase.
