Following recent updates to the EmaraTax portal, the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has introduced the option to sign up/login to the EmaraTax account via UAE Pass, the national digital identity for all citizens, residents, and visitors in the United Arab Emirates.
What is UAE Pass?
It is UAE's National Digital Identity and Digital Signature application, allowing access to various government services by any federal or local government entity. It also allows users to link their direct and indirect tax registrations to access multiple accounts through a single application.
Previous mandate on the Economic Substance Regulation (ESR) portal
The UAE Ministry of Finance (MoF) had previously mandated UAE Pass-based login and registration on the ESR portal w.e.f. 25 August 2023. Consequently, taxpayers faced several issues linking their MoF Corporate Accounts with their respective UAE Pass credentials, particularly when the MoF-registered email ID had become defunct or inaccessible. The time lag encountered in getting the MoF registered email ID updated in order to access the ESR Portal led to delays in filing the ESR Report, thereby causing late-filing penalty exposure.
UAE-Pass and the EmaraTax Portal
FTA has announced that signup and login on the portal will be
available only through UAE Pass w.e.f. 30 September 2024. Hence,
all existing EmaraTax users are to link their UAE Pass with their
accounts.
The User Guide issued by FTA can be accessed here.
In order to activate their UAE Pass, UAE citizens and residents
would have to register based on their Emirates ID on the UAE Pass
app, whereas non-residents would have to upload their passports.
Once the UAE Pass is activated, it can be used to create a new
EmaraTax account or link it with an existing user. The three
plausible scenarios are covered below:
I. User is registered on the EmaraTax portal and the
registered email matches the UAE Pass email
- Step 1: Click on the "Login with UAE Pass" option on the EmaraTax homepage
- Step 2: Enter the Emirates ID/email/phone no. registered with the UAE Pass
- Step 3: Confirm the UAE Pass authentication notification received on the UAE Pass mobile app
II. User is registered on the EmaraTax portal but the registered email does not match the UAE Pass email
- Step 4: Click 'Yes' to the question "Do you have an online account with EmaraTax?" on the "UAE PASS - EmaraTax profile linking" webpage
- Step 5: Enter your EmaraTax registered email
- Step 6: Confirm the UAE Pass email ID by entering the OTP received on the EmaraTax registered email ID
III. User is not registered on the EmaraTax portal
- Step 4: Click 'No' to the question "Do you have an online account with EmaraTax?" on the "UAE PASS - EmaraTax profile linking" webpage
- Step 5: An EmaraTax account will be automatically created based on your UAE Pass account details (First name, last name, email and mobile number)
Our CommentsBearing past experience in mind, taxpayers should be vigilant
in ensuring their EmaraTax login credentials are up-to-date and
ensure timely linking of their UAE Pass with their EmaraTax
account. Furthermore, they should get accustomed to the new login
option to ensure no hiccups faced in accessing and filing the
respective VAT and Corporate Tax returns, considering the timelines
and return-filing due dates.
