Jones Day Opens Singapore Office, Further Expanding Its International Presence
SINGAPORE, January 8, 2001 -- The international law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue has announced the opening of an office in Singapore. This opening marks the firm's 26th office, 14 of which are outside the United States.
"Singapore has always been an important financial center in Southeast Asia, and many companies are now establishing headquarters or significant operations there," said Jones Day Managing Partner Patrick F. McCartan. "Led by a progressive government focused on economic development, Singapore is also devoting substantial resources to becoming a global technology center, and with the increasing amount of foreign investment in Asia, it has become a forum of choice for dispute resolution." David F. Clossey, Jones Day Partner-in-Charge, International added, "Singapore's steady growth, coupled with its favorable economic policies and the strength of its financial, banking, and other sectors, makes it an ideal location for an international law firm. Our goal as a firm is to do business where our clients do business, and increasingly our clients are making Singapore the center of their Southeast Asia activities." The office will initially be composed of 12 lawyers, approximately half of whom will be transferring from other Jones Day offices in the United States and Europe; included in this group will be Emad Khalil, a Partner specializing in project finance currently resident in New York. Other specializations will include mergers and acquisitions and other direct investment transactions, banking and finance, securities and dispute resolution. A principal focus of the office will be the information technology sector. Jai S. Pathak will be Partner-in-Charge of the office, resident in Singapore.
"Since the establishment of our first office in Asia more than 15 years ago, we have represented many clients in transactions relating to Singapore and virtually all of the other countries of Southeast Asia," said Mr. Pathak. "This new office will allow us better to serve both existing and new clients."
Jones Day is an international global law firm with 26 offices in the centers of business and finance throughout the world. With more than 1,400 lawyers, it ranks among the world's largest law firms.
