You keep up with industry trends and fluctuations because that's your business. But how much do ordinary Americans know about oil? We're not talking about subsea construction or geophysical software applications – basic facts about where it comes from. Oil and Gas Investor published the results of a survey about domestic and global oil sources. How do you think people did on this quiz? As the saying goes, the answers may surprise you!

Many of the respondents were under the outdated impression that Saudi Arabia has the most oil. Over half said that Saudi Arabia produced the most oil in the world. In fact, the U.S. now claims that title! When asked who had the world's largest oil reserve, who do you think they guessed? Saudi Arabia again – but the real answer is Venezuela. And who did they guess the U.S. imports the most oil from? Almost 70% said Saudi Arabia, when in fact it's our neighbors to the north. We get a third of our oil from Canada and only 13% from Saudi Arabia.

What about domestically? When asked which U.S. state has the most oil, around half the respondents said it was Alaska, when in fact Texas is highest, with the world's 10th largest oil reserve. These quiz-takers aren't looking so good! But don't worry, they got the last one right – the majority of those surveyed guessed correctly when asked which state's economy is most dependent on oil: Alaska.
