A 3-year-old girl in China has become the first person in the world to undergo a skull reconstruction using 3D printing technology. The procedure involved a full 3D reconstruction and 3D printing of a new titanium skull in order to reposition her brain. Three separate titanium mesh implants were created to replace the top portion of the little girl's skull. As the girl grows, the titanium pieces will become surrounded by her own bone. This will lead to the overall strengthening of the top of her skull. This is not the first time that a medical procedure involving 3D printing has improved a child's life. A baby boy suffered from frequent epileptic seizures. 3D printing was used to create a 3D-print of the boy's brain in order to assist in a hemispherectomy procedure. The procedure was successful, and the boy eventually became seizure-free.
