Based in California, Divergent Microfactories is working to create a cleaner, more efficient manufacturing paradigm based around 3D printing, for the benefit of the auto industry. The idea is based around a 3D-printed aluminum chassis joint, called a node.
Divergent says the node-based chassis weighs some 90 percent less than an average car chassis and requires far less material and energy to produce. The company still needs to prove its construction methods can meet automotive safety standards. Divergent also needs to demonstrate that the efficiency and economic benefit it claims is accurate. Divergent's announcement did not include a timeframe or pricing, so individuals and other companies just need to keep their eyes and ears open for any positive news.
