Federal prosecutors have widened the scope of their investigation into the workings of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and are now looking into whether the administration of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie retaliated against Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop after Fulop declined to endorse Christie for re-election in 2013.
Additionally, investigations are starting to look towards Chris Christie's subordinates according to the Fox Rothschild criminal defense attorney, Alain Leibman who is not involved with either party.
Leibman also suggests investigators may see the Fulop affair as an attempt to accuse someone higher up in the Christie administration. "It's like regicide—if you're going to kill the king, you better be sure you've killed him. That's the first principle of political corruption [investigations]. You take the best shot," Leibman says.
He admits that he has no inside knowledge of the situation. However, from what he does know, he believes the Fulton matter potentially provides, "a much more direct connection to the top of the political structure than somebody deciding to conduct a fake traffic study on their own." This statement refers to an original claim that said the lane closures were part of a traffic study. This claim has since been refuted.
