Scott L. Vernick was quoted in the Politico article, "GOP Debate Shows Cyber Progress; or Does It?." Full text can be found in the August 10, 2015, issue, but a synopsis is below.

Cybersecurity was mentioned multiple times during Thursday's Republican debate, a possible sign that data security may be taken more seriously at the presidential level.

However, Scott L.Vernick, a noted privacy attorney, thinks otherwise. He noted that the audience did not really get much substance.

"They talked around the issue a bit," he said. "It's easy, from my perspective, to rail against the issue or rail against the Chinese or the Russians without really talking about it."

He thought it was no surprise it came up this early in the 2016 presidential race. "Some of the more stunning things that have gone on have gone on in the last 24 months, rather than four years ago," he said. In addition, the debate format, with so many candidates on stage, made it understandable that depth was going to be hard to deliver in sound bytes.
