Akin Gump financial regulatory partner Christopher Leonard participated in a
post-Brexit briefing held by the Legatum Institute's Special
Trade Commission on "how the UK's vibrant financial
services sector can be best served in the Brexit negotiations with
Europe."
The roundtable was led by Steve Baker, MP and Treasury Select
Committee member. Shanker Singham, chairman of the Legatum
Institute Special Trade Commission, also participated.
The principal topics covered were: the necessity of membership
in the EU's single market, the difference between
"membership" in the European Economic Area and
"access" to it, the nature of the financial sector's
need and the minimum level of access it needs to the single market,
financial sector opportunities for the U.K. globally rather than
regionally through the EU, and the prospects for Brussels' and
the European Commission's antagonism through the Brexit
process.
