Hackers have managed to steal almost $5 million from Ryanair via a Chinese bank, the airline confirmed.

The money, amounting to £3.2m, was stolen through a fraudulent electronic transaction last week, according to Ryanair.

The funds have now been frozen – 'the airline expects these funds to be repaid shortly, and has taken steps to ensure that this type of transfer cannot recur', a Ryanair spokesperson stated to Governance and Compliance.  

Ryanair has been working with its banks and relevant authorities amid the investigation of fraud, adding that 'as this matter is subject to legal proceedings, no further comment will be made'.

The budget airline reported an increase of 28% in passengers last month, March, carrying a total of 6.67 million, which is 1.5 million more customers, when compared to the same period the previous year.

Ryanair Chief Marketing Officer, Kenny Jacobs put these results down to 'our lower fares, our stronger forward booking strategy and the continuing success of our "Always Getting Better" customer programme, which continues to deliver better than expected load factors on our significantly expanded winter schedule'.
