The Dounreay Planning Framework 2 (DPF2), a development brief for future land use and site restoration plans at the Dounreay Nuclear Power Station and Research Facility has been approved by the Highland Council's Planning, Environment and Development Committee.

The DPF2 represents and up-to-date overview of the policy context, regulatory regimes, site restoration programme and decommissioning works and provides explanation of the wider context for the component developments that are anticipated to be required. It replaces the former Framework which has been in place since 2006.

Zyda Law have been working with Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) and the Highland Council for many years and assisted in the creation of both the DPF and DPF2. Last year, we secured planning permission for Phase 2 of DSRL's 35 year decommissioning programme which includes the retrieval of intermediate level radioactive waste (ILW) from the shaft and silo at the facility which is widely considered to be one of the world's most challenging decommissioning operations. We also secured the change of use of an existing waste management facility to allow ILW to be stored until the construction of a national Geological Disposal Facility.

We look forward to continuing our ground breaking work at Dounreay.
