A list has been published of the health claims permitted to be made about food from 14 December 2012.

The new regulation, which does not include claims about reducing the risk of disease and those about children's development and health, comprises 222 permitted claims. It is available here.

Under EU law, health claims made about food are prohibited unless they have been authorised by the Commission (in accordance with EC Regulation 1924/2006) and included in a list of permitted claims.

This means that, from 14 December 2012, any packaging, flyer or other advertising about dietary supplements that contains one or more of the 1,719 rejected claims will have to be withdrawn from the market.
