On 9 June 2010, following public consultation in 2009, the Scottish Government published its first Zero Waste Plan ("the Plan"), which sets out key actions and new targets to deal with the reduction, management and treatment of waste in Scotland. A copy of the Plan is available here

The Plan covers all waste, including that generated by commerce and industry. The Plan has far reaching implications across all sectors such as food, retail, waste management, energy, clean tech, procurement, construction and design. In addition to setting the direction in Scotland (under which wide ranging legislation and policy measures shall be introduced) the Plan may also influence the approach to future policy in other parts of the UK where separate waste plans are in place, particularly in light of last week's announcement of a fundamental review of all existing waste policies to include every aspect of waste policy and waste management delivery in England.
