The newly established National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) is committed to looking broadly at long-term infrastructure needs and giving impartial advice to ministers and Parliament. The NIC is to report before the next budget (which is scheduled for 16 March 2016) on three national challenges: improving connectivity between cities in the north of England, large-scale transport infrastructure improvements in London and improving how electricity demand and supply are balanced. The terms of reference for these challenges were published in October 2015 and the NIC is currently seeking views on its governance, structure and operation through a consultation, which ends on 17 March 2016.
In preparing its report, the NIC is engaging with all interested parties such as government departments, regulators and organisations such as National Rail and the National Grid. It has also gathered evidence and ideas from local government, businesses, service providers and users through a consultation, which closed earlier this month.
