The Toronto Police Service is now being examined by the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC).

The OHRC has launched an inquiry that looks into the Toronto Police Service, its board, and the Special Investigations Unit, to see if there has been racial discrimination and racial profiling of Black communities in Toronto.

The Commission has requested data spanning from January 2010 to June 2017, and will be looking into certain interactions which include:

  • Use of force
  • Arrests and charges
  • Stop and questioning practices
  • Forms and conditions of release for various offence categories including:
    • Obstructing or assaulting an officer
    • Simple drug possession
    • Failing to comply with bail conditions

In addition to this data, they will also be looking into the culture of the Toronto Police Service, their training, policies and procedures, and will assess racial discrimination accountability mechanisms. Interestingly enough, the Toronto Police Service is also conducting its own culture review after being recommended to do so by the Transformational Task Force.
