The world's first work health and safety (WHS) international standard, 'ISO 45001', is currently being developed. It is expected to be approved in its final form in November 2017 and published in March 2018.
As with the current Australian/New Zealand standard 4801, the international standard 45001 is designed to provide organisations with a framework for creating a safe workplace by implementing systems and processes to eliminate or reduce workplace injury as well as continually improve WHS performance.
ISO 45001 is intended for use by any organisation, regardless of its size or the nature of its work.
The standard will assist an organisation to fulfil its legal requirements under the Australian safety laws by outlining an approach for the implementation of reasonably practicable steps to ensure safety.
In October this year, the Master Builders Association NSW will be conducting a master class on the new standard.
The master class will include speakers from the international standards committee Kristian Glaesel DK (ISO45001 Convenor), David Smith UK (ISO45001 Chairman) and Charles Corrie UK (ISO45001 Secretary) as well as Michael Selinger, partner, Holding Redlich.
Michael Selinger will be talking at the master class about how the standard will assist directors and officers of organisations meet their own personal duty of care, being the duty of 'due diligence'.
