The new car sales industry experienced a 1.9% decline in vehicle sales for the October 2014 calendar YTD (924,189 vehicles sold), compared to the October 2013 calendar YTD (942,547 vehicles sold). All states suffered a drop in sales with Western Australia and Tasmania experiencing the largest drop with a 7.7% decrease. Approximately 59% of the vehicle sales to October 2014 occurred in New South Wales and Victoria.

Market Share

Toyota continues to hold the largest market share at 18.2% followed by Holden and Mazda at 9.8% and 9.1% respectively.
The Toyota Corolla was the highest selling new car, overtaking the Mazda since the June 2014 quarter update with 36,925 units sold to 31 October 2014. The Mazda 3 continued to perform strongly, having sold 36,011 units. The Toyota Hilux rounds out the top 3 selling vehicles, with 31,876 units sold to 31 October 2014.

The domestic manufacturers have seen a reduction in market share since 31 October 2013 with only 84,164 of the total 924,189 vehicles sold in Australia in the first ten months of 2014. This amounts to 9.1% of new vehicle sales in Australia and this trend is expected to continue, with Toyota, Ford and Holden all ceasing manufacturing in Australia by 2017.
