In an article for the August edition of Financier Worldwide Magazine, partner Sage Revell shares some key takeaways from a panel discussion she moderated at global accelerator FemTech Lab’s “Decoding the Future of Women” conference.

The article borrowed its title from the June panel discussion, “Catching the Herd of FemTech Unicorns,” which featured Priya Oberoi, Chantal Noble Haldorsen, Esther Reynal de St Michel Richardot and Eamonn Carey as representatives from various investment funds. The article also provided a broad overview of the FemTech sector.

“Despite its exponential growth over the past few years, ‘FemTech’ is a relatively novel segment in the health technology market,” Revell wrote. “In essence, it is innovation at the intersection of life sciences and technology to address health issues that solely or disproportionately affect women and address general health conditions that affect women differently to men, such as cardiovascular or oncological conditions.”

There are currently only seven FemTech unicorns in existence (privately owned startups that have achieved a valuation of $1 billion or more), but there is a growing pipeline of potential global unicorns and increasing support from governments worldwide to help fund the space, the article stated. Among the areas most likely to produce the next ones based on current trends, according to Revell’s panel are: affordable assisted reproductive technologies, including those tackling male reproductive health issues, products for early diagnosis and treatment of cancers, and innovations related to menopause.

“It is an exciting time to watch this growth sector, with many more unicorns on the horizon,” Revell concluded. “Which one will be the next?”
