have reportedly discovered a novel way to make strong and
moisture-resistant sand molds using simple sugar, instead of more
toxic materials, as the binding agent. OSU reports that the
technology is ready for more applied research and testing and
states that it is seeking investors and industrial partners to
commercialize it.
Sand based molds are used in making about 70% of all metal
castings.
