The Huffington Post is running a series of interviews with twenty women who are in the construction industry in New York City.
Nedelka "Mac" McLean is a carpenter apprentice, currently working on renovating a school on Staten Island damaged by Sandy.
She stated that she chose to get involved in construction at the age of 50 because she had a desire to create.
What I actually found most interesting was the comments portion of the posting. I know that comment sections can sometimes be a somewhat interesting look into the internet. However, one particular commenter posted that he was surprised that women would go into construction, and why they wouldn't just be a nurse, HR professional, teacher, or dental hygienist. I was not really surprised by this sentiment, but found it sad that a commenter actually felt that women shouldn't get dirty in construction and just do the "traditional" women's jobs.
Women in construction is certainly increasing, but the view that women should be in more traditional jobs certainly still exists.
