Borenius & Kemppinen set to become pre-eminent expert in maritime and transport law
Borenius & Kemppinen bolsters its expertise in maritime, transport and insurance law as Aminoff & Weissenberg, a leading firm in these sectors, merges with B&K. Already in possession of solid know-how in the area of international ship finance, B&K now intends to start up a major shipping practice. As the cutting-edge expertise in this field used to be concentrated in only a few law firms in Finland, a merger is the obvious way to augment and consolidate B&K’s excellence in these sectors.
Particular expertise in maritime and transport law has traditionally been in high demand in Finland, as some 80% of Finland’s foreign trade takes place by sea. Moreover, Finland’s location guarantees the need for substantial warehousing as well as international carriage by road, rail and air.
The world's largest cruise lines have learned to rely on B&K in financing and other legal issues involving luxury cruise liners built in Finland. Subsequent to the merger, B&K will be able to provide an even more comprehensive range of services also in areas such as charterparty disputes, collision matters and salvage, general average, cargo claims, environmental and ITF matters and arrest proceedings.
The merger furthermore boosts the expertise of B&K in matters relating to road carriage, aviation and freight forwarding. The insurance law and arbitration know-how within A&W will complement the firm’s service supply to Finnish and international clients alike.
The five-strong staff of Aminoff & Weissenberg will transfer to B&K under their existing terms of employment. Jan Aminoff boasts an impressive track record in the fields of maritime, transport, and aviation law as well as arbitration. Together with Ulla von Weissenberg, he will take over as head of B&K’s expanded Shipping practice.
