The 2024 GATA Gibraltar Tax Essay Prize in Gibraltar is open for entries. This Prize, sponsored by Sovereign Trust Gibraltar Limited was initially conceived by Grahame Jackson in 2022. Jackson holds multiple roles including Chair of GATA, Tax Advisory Partner at Hassans, and podcast host, and he introduces this prestigious competition aimed at both professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Winners will be contacted by the end of July 2024 with the following cash prizes up for grabs: First Prize - £750; Under 25 Award - £250.

A panel of distinguished experts will judge the academic essay submissions that showcase deep analytical skills, critical perspectives, and the exploration of either theoretical or practical taxation issues. Entrants may choose topics related to domestic Gibraltar taxation, which covers various taxes imposed by the Government of Gibraltar or its related entities, or international tax issues that influence Gibraltar's tax framework, encompassing both direct and indirect tax considerations.

The jury for this competition includes Rory Mullan QC of Old Square Tax Chambers, John Azzopardi CTA, Tax Director at RSM, Lynette Chaudhary CTA, Tax Director at Sovereign Tax Services, Jamie Trinidad KC, Senior Counsel at Albertson Solicitors and Consultant at Isolas LLP, and Grahame Jackson ADIT.

Lynette Chaudhary stated, "Our aim with the Prize is to elevate and widen access to insightful and authoritative discussions on Gibraltar's tax system and its role within the global tax framework. By pooling scholarly contributions from throughout the field, and by celebrating the achievements of contributors, we can significantly enhance the tax profession in Gibraltar and its broader community."

Grahame Jackson added: "Gibraltar stands as a significant player in global finance with a vibrant tax community, and it's vital that we encourage and acknowledge innovative contributions that can benefit and inspire emerging tax professionals."

He further enthused about the continuation of the under 25 category, looking forward to the fresh perspectives it will bring. Each essay must be an original work of 2,500 - 7,000 words, thoroughly referenced, and should steer clear of simple historical recounts or mere summaries of legislation.

The deadline for submissions is set for Friday, June 21, 2024, with entries to be sent to info@itbfiscalis.com. Winners will be announced by the end of July 2024.
