WorkSafe inspectors will hone in on the risks of structural
collapse during construction work as part of their latest safety
blitz following a spate of incidents in recent months. As part of
the state-wide campaign, inspectors will focus on buildings and
associated structures under construction including walls and frames

Mid-North Coast business fined over worker's
death
A mid-North Coast meat processing business has been fined $375,000
over the death of a worker at its Frederickton plant in 2015.
Macleay River Protein Pty Ltd pleaded guilty to a charge under
section 32 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 for
failing to comply with its duty under section 19(1) of the Act and
was fined $375,000 in the District Court (17 August 2017).

PBS scheme discussion paper welcomed
The NHVR has welcomed the release of the PBS assessment discussion
paper by the National Transport Commission (NTC).
NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said the Assessing the effectiveness of
the PBS Scheme paper highlighted the enormous safety and
productivity benefits of PBS vehicles (15 August 2017).

Take care of young workers
Not only does research indicate that 15 to 25 year olds have a 75
per cent greater chance of being injured at work, but in NSW alone,
15 workers in this age group are injured every day. Partner them
with a more experienced co-worker to act as a 'work buddy'

Standards Australia have released a new draft standard for
installation of battery energy systems (BESS), DR AS/NZS 5139:2017
Electrical installations—Safety of battery systems for use
with power conversion equipment. This standard outlines the hazards
that are associated with BESS and specifies installation methods
that eliminate or minimize these hazards.

disciplinary hearings against three licence holders outlined here.
The Electrical Licensing Committee's actions are in addition to

WorkCover Queensland: The Wiring Rules transition
arrangements
Standards Australia AS/NZS3000 (the Wiring Rules) is being
updated and is expected to be published later this year.
Transitioning from one edition of the Wiring Rules to the next can
impact on the compliance requirements for an electrical
installation. The enforcement date for the new edition of the
Wiring Rules will be six months after the publication date of the
standard. For example if the new standard is published in December
2017 the enforcement date will be July 2018 (15 August 2017).

during construction work. The list of reported incidents for the
period from 21 July to 15 August 2017 includes 36 incidents

falls, electric shocks and serious 'near misses'.
