In 2015, registered business units in Malta amounted to 87,971, an increase of 10.9 per cent, or 8,615, over the number of registered units in 2014, the National Statistics Office (NSO) reported.

According to data published by the NSO on Monday, registered units in financial and insurance activities, professional, scientific and technical activities, administrative and support service activities, and construction amounted to 15.6, 11.3, 7.8 and 7.7 per cent respectively of the total registered units in 2015.

97.4 per cent of registered units employ less than 10 persons and are considered micro entities. These micro entities range from electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning suppliers, cottage industry activities where employers and employees are members of the same household, activities of extraterritorial organisations and bodies and public administration and defence.

On the other hand, only 100 registered units employ more than 250 persons and are classified as large undertakings.
