Please be advised that the referendum for Nevis's independence was held on 10 August 1998. Voter turnout was relatively low at 54%. The vote for independence was 61.7%. The vote required by the constitution was 66.67% (2/3). It would seem that although both parties CCM (concerned Citizens Movement) and NRP (National Reformation Party) have stated they wanted independence the NRP told its members to vote "No". The vote therefore ran down political lines and virtually mirrored the election results. A analysis of the impact the results will have on the two islands will be provided at a future date.
