Sanctions were imposed in 2004 by the EU and UN against Sudan. South Sudan became an independent country on 9 July 2011 following a referendum held earlier that year.
The EU regime has been updated to incorporate separate sanctions regimes for both countries.
Sudan and South Sudan are subject to arms embargoes, as well as asset freeze regimes.
