John Joseph Aquilina was officially appointed high commissioner of Malta in Dhaka on June 16th during a reception organised by the consulate of the Republic of Malta in the Bangladeshi capital of Gulshan. Malta's honorary consul in Bangladesh, M Shoeb Chowdury was present at this credentials ceremony and stated that following this event, bilateral ties between Malta and Bangladesh will grow stronger.

M Shoeb Chowdury referred to more opportunities for young Bangladeshi entrepreneurs who would be looking for business opportunities in Malta. This view was supported by other speakers during the ceremony who expressed that they are also looking forward to strengthened diplomatic relations between Malta and Bangladesh.

During the ceremony, John Joseph Aquilina pointed out that the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will be held in Malta next November. A delegation of top Bangladeshi businessmen will also be attending the meeting and Bangladeshi commerce minister Tofail Ahmed stated that they will be playing a very important role.

Also present at the accreditation ceremony were Palestine Ambassador and Dean of Diplomatic Corps Shaher Mohammad, Russian Ambassador Alexander A Nikolaev, South Korean Ambassador Lee Tun-Young as well as numerous other diplomats, government officials, political figures, economists and members of the civil society.
