Construction looks set to begin on the Meygen tidal energy Project off the coast of Caithness in Scotland next month after conditions were finalised in order to initiate the first drawdown from financiers (Crown Estate and Scottish Enterprise).

The project has been worked on since 2007 when Stakeholder Engagement began. Environmental Studies commenced in 2009 with an Environmental Impact Assessment for phase 1 of the development completed in 2011. The project secured 253MW of grid capacity in 2012 and submitted applications to Marine Scotland and the Highland Council.

Once completed, the tidal energy project will have a capacity of almost 400MW with the first power being generated in 2016.
