European Court of Justice dismisses appeal in synthetic rubber cartel case
The ECJ has dismissed an appeal by Eni SpA against the General Court's judgment which largely upheld the fines imposed by the European Commission for participation in the synthetic rubber cartel. The ECJ held that the General Court had rightly found that the Commission had been correct to attribute to Eni liability for the infringements of its wholly-owned subsidiaries, particularly in the absence of sufficient evidence from Eni to rebut the presumption of actual decisive influence. European Commission conducts dawn raids in oil and biofuels sectors
Officials of the European Commission have conducted unannounced inspections at the premises of several companies active in the oil and biofuels sectors, as a result of suspected anti-competitive practices. The European Commission suspects that the companies may together have reported distorted prices to a Price Reporting Agency in order to manipulate the published prices for various oil and biofuel products. The European Commission further suspects that the companies may have prevented others from participating in the price assessment process, in order to distort published prices. Click here.

- Joaquin Almunia has welcomed an offer of commitments by Visa Europe, which address concerns in respect of its inter-bank fees for credit card payments in the EEA.
