President Donald Trump signed an executive order on June 24, 2019, seeking, among other things, disclosure of hospital pricing for common tests and procedures. HHS Secretary Alex Azar stated that the goal is to give patients practical information to reduce the costs. The order also requires that patients are told, prior to services rendered, what the out-of-pocket expenses are for many procedures in an "easy-to-read, patient-friendly" format. The order does not immediately trigger these changes, but rather sets in motion the rule making process for HHS and other federal agencies to follow.
