At last week's annual Facebook conference, Facebook's head of cybersecurity said that Facebook is aware of instances in which foreign actors have circumvented Facebook's recently imposed policies concerning political advertising on the platform.
As we have previously reported, the fallout from the 2016 U.S. presidential election led Facebook to enact several policies placing stricter requirements on publishing political ads on the platform, including providing information regarding who paid for the political ad.
Facebook said that it was aware of at least two instances in which foreign actors, purportedly located in Russia, created fraudulent accounts with the purpose of publishing and distributing false information on various political issues. As a result, Facebook has taken down over 100 accounts, pages and groups associated with this fraudulent activity.
