FINRA warned member firms about reported instances of fraudsters posing as FINRA employees in an attempt to obtain confidential information.

In an Information Notice, FINRA urged firms to substantiate the identity of any caller claiming to be a FINRA employee before revealing confidential information, noting overseas phone numbers or email addresses as possible signs of fraudulent communications. In addition, FINRA recommended that firms contact their respective Regulatory Coordinator if questions arise concerning the legitimacy of a FINRA communication.

FINRA also alerted firms to "exercise similar caution before responding to any regulatory inquiry that purports to be from the SEC or any other regulator."
