The Federal Election Commission has issued a proposal, written by vice chair Ellen Weintraub, that would place stricter requirements on online political advertisements. The proposal would apply to campaigns, political parties, and other organizations that attempt to influence elections.

If adopted, the proposal would result in Facebook, Google and other online platforms having to accommodate disclaimers for political ads. Similarly, streaming music services would have to accommodate oral disclaimers for political ads in audio format. Candidates buying online video and audio ads would have to state their names and add, "And I approve this message."

The proposal will require the votes from four of the six member commission. Currently, the commission is comprised of three Republicans, one Democrat, and two vacancies.
