On August 9, a coalition of 33 state Attorneys General announced
a $5.5 million settlement with a major national insurance company
and a subsidiary for a 2012 data breach that resulted in the loss
of personal information belonging to more than 1.2 million
Americans. The data breach was allegedly caused by the failure to
apply a critical security patch, and lost data included Social
Security numbers, driver's license numbers, credit scoring
information, and other personal data.
